When you think about golf in Portugal you probably think about the Algarve. There are also some courses in central Portugal but the north is not renowned for courses.
Indeed, in Porto, choice is limited but there are places you can play golf in and around Porto at bijou golf courses that have good facilities.
Citgolf is in Porto on the circunvalação road (just behind a Galp petrol station and next to a Mercedes/Smart showroom. Citygolf offers a nine-hold golf course as well as a well-tended driving range and putting green.
Facilities also include an impressive restaurant/café and a well-presented, well-stocked golf shop.
Across the Douro River in Vila Nova de Gaia – just underneath the A1 highway at the Canidelo turn-off (going south), you find Quinta do Fojo golf course – a wooded course that only has six holes due to space restrictions, but it is a popular course with local golfers.
Quinta do Fojo also has a shop (smaller but well stocked) and a restaurant with plenty of outside tables for visitors to enjoy sitting among the greenery. It’s also a good place to hold business functions.
Both courses offer lessons.
If you drive south along the coast there is also Miramar, but we’ll look at that one another day.
