Brits might be renowned for their quirky sense of humour, but when it comes to getting us grinning, it’s the traditional things that win the day.
The majority of the 1,500 people questioned by holiday provider cottages4you listed loved ones such as friends, family and partners as the thing that makes them smile the most, with proud parents citing children most commonly. Listed almost as frequently were the nation’s pets, ranging from puppies and boisterous bunnies to kittens and wolf-whistling cockatiels!
Food came in a close runner up and some of the choices varied between crumpets with marmite and hot chocolate with marshmallows. One respondent simply named ‘gravy’ as the thing that raised a grin. Brits were united in their love of a good cup of tea and Earl Grey and Yorkshire Tea were mentioned by hundreds of people.
Among some of the more surprising answers were ‘my own reflection’, ‘dad dancing’, ‘a caravan’ and even ‘finding someone else has emptied the dishwasher’. And it seems the 2012 Olympics are still having an impact with one respondent claiming ‘the lovely smile of Jessica Ennis’ was the thing that made them smile the most.
