Parents spend £100 on apps for kids

The average iPad and iPhone owning parent has spent more than £100 on apps specifically for their children, according to a survey, with the majority admitting to having used their Apple device as a distraction or reward technique to encourage good behaviour.

The survey, by VoucherCodesPro.co.uk, was carried out in a bid to find out more about the amount spent on apps by people around the UK; specifically when looking at the spend on apps by parents for their children. 1,726 mums and dads took part in the poll, each of whom had a child aged 10 or under and owned either an iPhone, iPad or both.

When asked if they had ever downloaded apps on their iPhone or iPad specifically for their children, the majority of those polled, 78%, said that they indeed had. These respondents were then asked how much each app tended to cost them and how many they had downloaded for their children in total.

The research found the average app downloaded by parents for their children to cost £3.99 and the average number of apps downloaded by parents for their children to be ‘26’. Taking all into account, that would mean that the average parent with children or a child aged 10 or under has spent £103.74 on apps on their iPhone or iPad specifically for their kids.

When asked if they ever used the apps that they had actually downloaded for their child or children, a third, 32%, of those taking part said they had. When asked to state why they had downloaded apps for their children in the first place, 44% said it was a ‘distraction for their child’ and so kept them occupied, whilst 31% said they used apps as a ‘reward technique’ for their youngster.

When asked to specify what sort of apps they had downloaded for their child or children and told to pick all that applied from a list of possible answers, the most popular apps parents downloaded for their children were ‘educational’ (81% of those who had downloaded apps for their children, had downloaded educational apps), fun and games (67%) and books (36%).
