Stardust Kids – dressed for success

Geraldine Bedford's Stardust KidsI produce a range of cool kids clothing. I sell to around 200 shops worldwide. In addition, I offer dropshipping to selected websites (usually Mums and Dads running their own online stores). I also run a party plan scheme offering 50% commissions to parents selling my collection at home parties.

I sell the range direct to shops.

How long have you been doing this?
I started the business in 1998 initially selling greeting cards.  I now exclusively produce funky baby and kids clothing inspired by the popular culture icons I have grown up with.

What kind of capital is needed to get going?
I started with £5000 and an additional bank over draft of £10,000

What are the monthly running costs?
My overhead have grown from around £2000 per month to over £10,000

Can you make a profit right away?
It took me nearly 8 years to make a profit but that is largely because I have had two children during this time and was only able to keep the business breaking even until recently.  However, my business has grown hugely during this time.

How many hours do you work each week?
I am in the office for between 20 and 30 hours per week.  However, I spend a great deal of time working on my garment designs, and designing and marketing my website during the evenings

Describe how the business is run
I have a small work shop and now employ 2 other members of staff.  We have the garments made by a small family run business in India and we print all the t-shirts in our workshop.  All the design, marketing, PR, invoicing and packing is all done in house.
